Facebook brings free internet access to Kenyan mobile users with Internet.org

A little more than a year after the launch of Internet.org, an initiative designed to bring Internet access to everyone on the planet, Facebook has announced that the Internet.org app will be arriving in Kenya this week.

The Android-only app delivers free access to ‘basic’ internet services, covering education, employment, finance, health and more.

Among the services available are BBC News, BBC Swahili, Facts for Life, Wikipedia and, of course, Facebook and Facebook Messenger. Users won’t receive data charges through their mobile network operator when browsing through the app, which, for launch, is restricted to Airtel subscribers.

Today’s news means the app is now in its third African country after Zambia and Tanzania.
